Character Progression

After each event, all characters (whether they attended the event or not) earn experience points (XP) determined by their age category. This will also affect new characters created after the first (and subsequent) event.

  • Neonates earn 15XP after each event
  • Ancillae earn 10XP after each event
  • Elders earn 5XP after each event

For example, an ancilla character created before the first event starts with 150XP; an ancilla character created after the fifth event would start with 200XP. Similarly, a neonate character created before the first event starts with 50XP, but a neonate character created after the third event would start with 95XP.

You can spend XP to purchase new Attributes, Skills, Backgrounds, Merits, and Disciplines, improving your character and allowing them to “learn” as they go through stories and experiences in the game. Please note that you may only spend earned XP to increase the Generation background if your character has committed diablerie.

Universal XP costs

Some XP costs are applicable to all characters:

  • Attributes: 3XP per point
    • Maximum of 10 dots in an attribute – this limit can be increased by the Generation background’s bonus attribute points
  • In-Clan Discipline: (New Level) x 3XP
    • So to buy an In-Clan Discipline from one dot to two would cost 6XP (2 x 3), or from four dots to five dots would cost 15XP
  • Increase Morality: 10XP per point (up to a maximum of 6)
  • Ritual: (Level of Ritual) x 2XP
  • Remove a Flaw: Flaw Cost x 2XP
  • Add a Merit: Merit Cost x 1XP

All other costs are determined by how many dots of the Generation background the character has.

Neonates (1 dot of Generation)

  • Background: (New Level) x 1XP
    • i.e. the first dot of a new Background costs 1XP, going from three dots to four dots of a Background costs 4XP, and so on
  • Skill: (New Level) x 1XP
    • i.e. going from two dots to three dots of a Skill costs 3XP, going from four dots to five dots of a Skill costs 5XP, and so on
  • Out-of-Clan Discipline: (New Level) x 4XP
  • Technique: 12XP each

Younger Ancillae (2 dots of Generation)

  • Background: (New Level) x 2XP
    • i.e. the first dot of a new Background costs 2XP, going from three dots to four dots of a Background costs 8XP, and so on
  • Skill: (New Level) x 2XP
    • i.e. going from two dots to three dots of a Skill costs 6XP, going from four dots to five dots of a Skill costs 10XP, and so on
  • Out-of-Clan Discipline: (New Level) x 4XP
    • To purchase an out-of-clan discipline with earned XP, you must have a teacher
    • To learn Necromancy out-of-clan, you must also have the Necromantic Training Merit or equivalent
    • i.e. the first dot of a new Out-of-Clan Discipline costs 4XP, to go from three dots to four dots costs 16XP, and so on
  • Technique: 12XP each

Older Ancillae (3 dots of Generation)

  • Background: (New Level) x 2XP
    • i.e. the first dot of a new Background costs 2XP, going from three dots to four dots of a Background costs 8XP, and so on
  • Skill: (New Level) x 2XP
    • i.e. going from two dots to three dots of a Skill costs 6XP, going from four dots to five dots of a Skill costs 10XP, and so on
  • Out-of-Clan Discipline: (New Level) x 4XP
    • To purchase an out-of-clan discipline with earned XP, you must have a teacher
    • To learn Necromancy out-of-clan, you must also have the Necromantic Training Merit or equivalent
    • i.e. the first dot of a new Out-of-Clan Discipline costs 4XP, to go from three dots to four dots costs 16XP, and so on
  • Technique: 20XP each
  • In-Clan Elder (level 6) Power: 18XP
    • You may only buy one elder power, whether in-Clan or out-of-Clan
    • You must have 5 dots in the Discipline to buy an Elder Power
  • Out-of-Clan Elder (level 6) Power: 24XP
    • You may only buy one elder power, whether in-Clan or out-of-Clan
    • You must have 5 dots in the Discipline to buy an Elder Power
    • To purchase an out-of-clan discipline with earned XP, you must have a teacher

Master Elder (4 dots of Generation)

  • Background: (New Level) x 2XP
    • i.e. the first dot of a new Background costs 2XP, going from three dots to four dots of a Background costs 8XP, and so on
  • Skill: (New Level) x 2XP
    • i.e. going from two dots to three dots of a Skill costs 6XP, going from four dots to five dots of a Skill costs 10XP, and so on
  • Out-of-Clan Discipline: (New Level) x 4XP
    • To purchase an out-of-clan discipline with earned XP, you must have a teacher
    • To learn Necromancy out-of-clan, you must also have the Necromantic Training Merit or equivalent
    • i.e. the first dot of a new Out-of-Clan Discipline costs 4XP, to go from three dots to four dots costs 16XP, and so on
  • In-Clan Elder (level 6) Power: 18XP
    • You must have 5 dots in the Discipline to buy an Elder Power

    • You must have 5 dots in the Discipline to buy an Elder Power
    • To purchase an out-of-clan discipline with earned XP, you must have a teacher

Luminary Elder (5 dots of Generation)

  • Background: (New Level) x 2XP
    • i.e. the first dot of a new Background costs 2XP, going from three dots to four dots of a Background costs 8XP, and so on
  • Skill: (New Level) x 2XP
    • i.e. going from two dots to three dots of a Skill costs 6XP, going from four dots to five dots of a Skill costs 10XP, and so on
  • Out-of-Clan Discipline: (New Level) x 5XP
    • To purchase an out-of-clan discipline with earned XP, you must have a teacher
    • To learn Necromancy out-of-clan, you must also have the Necromantic Training Merit or equivalent
    • i.e. the first dot of a new Out-of-Clan Discipline costs 5XP, to go from three dots to four dots costs 20XP, and so on
  • In-Clan Elder (level 6) Power: 18XP
    • You must have 5 dots in the Discipline to buy an Elder Power
  • Out-of-Clan Elder (level 6) Power: 30XP
    • You must have 5 dots in the Discipline to buy an Elder Power
    • To purchase an out-of-clan discipline with earned XP, you must have a teacher
  • In-Clan Luminary (level 7) Power: 24XP
    • You may only buy one luminary power
    • You must have at least one Elder Power from the same Discipline
